NT: Asylum seekers bribed Indonesian police, court told

A court has been told a group of asylum seekers bribed an Indonesian police officeron their way to Australia.

An Iraqi-born man has told Darwin Magistrates Court he arranged passage for himselfand three relatives to Australia.

The man said he paid $A3,200 so they could all travel on a boat from an Indonesianbeach with 220 other people.

But he said the boat was stopped by Indonesian police and they had to pay money tothe police before they could continue.

The man was giving evidence at the trial of ALI HASSAN ABDOLAMIR AL JENABI, who's chargedwith helping to smuggle more than 350 people to Australia on four boats in 2000 and 2001.

The witness said he wasn't sure if AL JENABI was the man who organised his voyage,but another Iraqi man has told the court he paid AL JENABI about $A3,400 for illegal passagesto Australia.
