Qld: Dams still below capacity

Dams across south-east Queensland are still critically low, despite heavy rain and
storms in recent weeks.

Brisbane Lord Mayor TIM QUINN, who's chairman of the South East Queensland Regional
Organisation of Councils, says the rain hasn't translated to water in dams.

And councils in some areas still have water restrictions in place.

Councillor QUINN says mayors from the 18 councils have met to discuss water supply
issues, including the capacity of major dams.

He says the Hinze Dam, which supplies water to the Gold Coast, is only about half full,
while the Wivenhoe Dam, which supplies much of the greater Brisbane area, is just over
half full.

He says several solutions to the problem of water supply have been floated over the
past 12 months, but serious concerns about their environmental impact and economic feasibility
have sent most of them back to the drawing board.
